PETRO's fuel storage expansion project on a mine site

Expanding Fuel Storage Capacity on a Mine Site

Overview

A valued customer returned to PETRO Industrial with a challenge: expanding their fuel storage capacity adjacent to the existing fuel farm that PETRO originally commissioned several years ago. Over the years, PETRO has not only maintained the facility but also ensured its optimal performance, keeping pumping equipment in perfect working condition and replacing filters regularly. This dedication has been key to maximising operational efficiency and prolonging the lifespan of the customer’s investment.

The Challenge

While servicing the existing 3 x 110,000L bulk fuel farm, PETRO was tasked with increasing the on-site fuel storage capacity to better support the mine’s growing operational demands. The main objectives were:

  • Reducing on-site traffic by minimising the frequency of fuel deliveries.
  • Minimising downtime of the fuel system during expansion.
  • Ensuring seamless integration of new infrastructure with the existing fuel farm.

The expansion would enable the fuel supplier to refill less frequently, improving efficiency and reducing disruptions on-site.

The Solution

PETRO designed and delivered a tailored solution by expanding the existing fuel storage facility with an additional 8 x 68,000L bulk fuel tanks. All new tanks were strategically linked to form a unified, integrated fuel farm. Key elements of the project included:

1.     Optimised Design & Integration: Utilising the original tanker offloading point, PETRO developed a streamlined system that allows the fuel supplier to refill both the new tanks and the primary tank housing the pumping equipment, electrical control system, iPETRO Fuel Management System, and EVO tank gauging.

2.     Seamless Implementation: During the installation of the additional tanks, PETRO ensured minimal disruption to daily operations. The existing 3-tank fuel farm continued to function as normal, allowing the mine’s fleet to remain operational.

3.     Turnkey Delivery: PETRO handled the project end-to-end, including design, manufacturing, on-site commissioning, and staff training. All works were completed within an impressive 8-week timeframe.

The Outcome

The expanded fuel farm significantly enhanced the mine’s operational efficiency. Key achievements include:

  • Increased storage capacity: A total of 8 additional tanks were seamlessly integrated, allowing for larger fuel reserves on-site.
  • Reduced site traffic: Fewer refuelling trips were required, enhancing safety and minimising disruptions.
  • Minimal downtime: The project was executed swiftly, ensuring that daily operations continued uninterrupted throughout the upgrade.

This project is a prime example of PETRO Industrial’s one-stop-shop capability. By delivering an end-to-end solution, PETRO demonstrated exceptional efficiency, innovation, and a commitment to client success.

Conclusion

PETRO Industrial successfully expanded the fuel storage capacity for the mine site, achieving all project goals and delivering tangible benefits. This case highlights our ability to customise solutions that meet unique operational challenges while maintaining minimal downtime and maximising efficiency.
